Michelle Frey and Kathryn Walter have gathered artefacts and information with which they conjure a mythology about iron. Their installation is both a display and a point of departure to discuss the social history of trade on the West Coast from pre-Canadian relations through modern industrialization. Beneath the crushing sounds of industry information and ideas flow in contrast, minute, light and mobile.
Trade may be considered as a process and an idea as they invite you to adventure from the ironworks to the port of Vancouver to contemplate and speculate about contemporary trade. Each visitor that makes this trek will receive a souvenir ‚ a tool of development and destruction that represents a history of both progress and ruin and marks the foundation of Canadian economy in the social imagination.
